What is Ash Wednesday?

Ash Wednesday is the first day of the Christian season of Lent, a 40-day period of prayer, fasting, and repentance leading up to Easter.  Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, which prepares Christians for the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus on Easter.

What happens on Ash Wednesday?

During church services:

  • A minister or priest places ashes on a person’s forehead in the shape of a cross.
  • The ashes usually come from palm branches blessed the previous year on Palm Sunday.
  • As the ashes are applied, words such as
“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19)
    or
“Repent, and believe in the Gospel” are spoken.
